ZipVit/LichfieldCCC Youth Races at Curborough 3

A damp day at the Curborough race track near Lichfield saw Zak take on the field of 18 Youth A riders. A walk of the course whilst the Youth B,C,D & E riders were racing got Zak a few handy tips on the dodgy corners. The course is also used for car racing and it was handy to know where the oily and slippy bits were.
Zak had fellow Scottish rider join him in the race, Fraser Martin who had beaten him at the Cyclefest on Sunday with his team tactics, so the race was on!
The gun saw the racers go off at a fast pace for their 40 minutes plus 5 laps and within a couple of laps a Heanor CC rider took up the pace and left the bunch getting to 30 second advantage over a few laps. A second rider wanted to make the jump but Zak and Fraser just were not having it and chased the second rider down. Slowly the lead of the break away Heanor CC lad was whittled away and he was brought back.
Zak played some good tactics, having a few digs from the bunch and making them chase him down then recovering in the bunch then digging again. A few riders tried to break off but with Zak and Fraser working the peleton to chase them down nothing was happening and it was looking like a sprint finish.
38 minutes into the race it happened, crash, the front man braked in the corner and with the course still damp, slid off taking Zak and another rider out. Zak managed to see it coming and slowed down to avoid a serious crash but ended up on the floor with the other 2 riders. Just 2 minutes to the end of the 40 minutes was just in time to allow the riders to take a lap out and rejoin the breakaway peleton that they were in before the crash.
The 7 or so riders rejoined together and 5 laps to go the pace was twitchy with no one wanting to take the front and make the break. The pace heated over the remaining few laps and on the bell lap Zak and Fraser were sat nicely in the 7 riders. Into the turnaround before the sprint Zak made the push and wanted to be first into the corner and out for the home stretch a slight uphill to the finish. Zak made the break and stretched out his lead taking first place, leaving Fraser behind for second place. Great race and great to see a Scottish 1st and 2nd on the podium. Great to see another win for Zak his second win of the week and third podium placing of the week. :D

Good to see some recognition on the National Scene.
