Marginal Gains - that's a phrase used by Team Sky and BCF, a marginal gain of half a second would have seen Fiona and Lora into the Pursuit final but it wasn't to be.

They were off in the last heat and set an electrifying pace going into the lead after only 2 laps and staying there until 10 laps of the 12 but they had started to fade and they faded enough to drop down into 3rd spot and into the Bronze ride off.

The pace they set for themselves (had they held it) would probably have been a new World Record (they were 2 seconds up on the Irish at the two 3rds point, the Irish eventually posted a time 1 second slower than the current World Record). Unfortunately the speed of the first part of a pursuit often dictates the speed of the latter part and this is where they faded slightly.

They are very disappointed and when you set yourself high standards then anything other than a win can seem like a disaster but it certainly isn't because they were right in there at the death, probably a bike length away from making the final.

Nice to see this link, though, not everyday you see 2 Ythan riders on the UCI Results sheets!!

Neil got a silver, tiniest margins again;

"The other highlight of the day came from GB’s two male tandem pairings in the B Kilo. Defending Champion Neil Fachie, piloted by Barney Storey, lost his title to Anthony Kappes, piloted by Craig Maclean, by a mere 0.099 of a second."

The women's Kilo was a great race to watch.

The Aussies won with a new World Record, beating Aileen McGlynn and Helen Scott into 2nd, who had put in a great ride but were eventually well beaten.

Fiona and Lora went in the middle of the field and at that point the Dutch were leading. Fiona and Lora, according to the time splits, were 1.7 seconds down on them after one lap but came storming back, with a huge accelaration over laps 2, 3 and 4 to finish down on them by 0.7 seconds. Still a fair sized margin but if they could put a second into them within 3 flying laps, it shows the speed that Fiona and Lora can generate.

The Dutch took the Bronze medal and Fiona and Lora ended up 6th, eventually but there was less than 1 second between 3rd place and 6th place, so super close.

SMALL MARGINS - Fiona and Lora are improving all the time and if they keep up this rate of improvement, will be serious contenders for Gold Medals, come the Summer.
