Super 6 Race 1 Gifford

Postby malcolm » Sat Mar 06, 2010 10:14 pm

Not long home from Edinburgh (via IKEA!) and the first Super 6 at Gifford.

8.2 mile course x 8 for the A Race, 65 miles.

When we arrived the B race was on its final two laps. Lots of dropped riders and when we got into Gifford it was a bit like MASH, quite a few riders with cuts and bruises. Plenty of crashes in the B race apparently including one with a car involved. The comm said that it was riders at fault and from my experience the A race is much faster but miles safer than the B so despite my impending kicking I was happy that the guys in my race were going to be sensible.

Endura were there x 3 with Gary Hand, David Lines and I think Callum Wilkinson. The Wheelbase Pro Team from Lancashire were there in strength on matching Cannondales, team van etc. The Granites had Phil, Ali,Veli, Keith and Sean.

The race was delayed by about 20mins due to the knock on from the B race crashes but as expected it was fast, even before the flag was in we were motoring. The circuit starts on a slight rise before going down a long descent and it was flat out from the top. I was spun out in 53 x 12 just behind Sean and Phil. Even Gordon Murdoch, who has won Super 6s was at the back andhe dropped out shortly after the first lap.

It slowed slightly before the next climb put the speed went up again and I was gone. I couldn't go any faster. By the end of the lap there was no sign of the bunch but I wasn't alone in being dropped. That was my race done, Sean was out on the second lap. Not sure what happened after that but the race was in bits after 3 laps. Four away when we left including Rab Wardell and an Endura rider and they were flying . If the race speed today (Ave 24mph) is a marker for the season its going to be hard for the guys not riding full time to compete for the top places and those of us who are 3rd cats are going to have a battle just to hang on at S6 level.

I can't see any results yet but for me the positives were that it was essentially 10miles at race speed, the new Ythan kit is comfortable (especially the shorts) and it showed me that I need a hell of a lot of speed work if I am going to get round the RR's.

Having said that its a great location for a race, really well organised (licences were left at the strip instead of being miles away in the comms car), race commentary and plenty of parking.
