European Police Cycling Champs 15 & 16 Sept. '12

Fiona fresh(ish) from the Paralympics travelled to North West France with the PSUK - Great Britain Police Cycling Team to contest the 2 event European Championships. This is traditionally a very tough event as many of the European Police authorities allow Professional Full Time riders to appear for them and/or there is an arrangement for under 23 Pro riders to join the Police but not actually start 'Policing' until their cycling career is over. For the first time Britain could call upon a full time rider - Fiona, to represent them - which was nice!!

First up was the 21km circuit TT on a technical and hilly course. Local favourite and womens' Tour de France rider Marie Laure Cloarec-Mathis was riding and not surprisingly posted the fastest time, closely followed by Caroline Ryan (Ireland) who is a pro, who rides mainly track (she's the World Track Championships Bronze medallist for the Points Race from 2012 in Melbourne) but also rode the women's Amstel Gold Race this year - we think she may well be off to the Road World's this week representing Ireland's National Team.

Fiona was in the mix though and was 16 seconds behind to take the Individual Bronze medal. She reckoned it would have been closer if she had been able to study the course a little more, to nail the corners and hills, but in any case she was right up with World Class riders in a straight fight and she beat the fancied German Pro's who were there, who are road racers and track pursuiters at international level, tending to suggest that Fiona has now stepped up to that level as a solo rider, perhaps a little too late in life to make a mark but it's good to know that she can perform at that level.

I don't have the full results available but I know that Great Britain secured the Team Bronze medal in the TT, due to high finishes by Fiona's team-mates, who made it into the top 10.

The 83km Road Race followed, the next day and Fiona was clearly in good form, so expected to cope in an event which is not her preferred type of racing but she CAN do it, when she wants to!!

It seems to have been a pretty attacking affair with a good few digs from the French team before Cloarec got away on her own, followed by a select group of about 15 who were whittled down as the chase ensued. The leaders came together near the end and Fiona had a couple of goes at getting away without success. Into the final 1km uphill finish Cloarec attacked and Fiona followed the wheel, they both faded a little as the line came up before Fiona went again but that long drag finish caused a real ebb and flow in the sprint, eventually Sandra Fitzgerald (Ireland) taking the win, with Cloarec in behind her, possibly a German in third, I think, with Fiona in 6th, with her GB team-mate Michelle Evans, 7th.

Looks like Fiona was just lacking the 'match practice' in Road Racing to time the move to the line to secure a higher finsh but she seemed happy with her ride, as well she might, as she has only done 2 tandem road races and this one in the last 12 months. She said she was a 'marked woman' after her strong TT, which made sense, she also said she never felt under a great deal of pressure in terms of strength or power, which again, considering the company she was keeping is testament to the work she has put in as a full time GB rider for the Paracycling Team and she can clearly live with some of the best female riders in Europe, on her day. A bit of a bummer that there wasn't a General Classification, just 2 separate events, as Fiona would have been second overall, which is a great way to finish her road season for 2012.

Again no full results available at this stage but hopefully they will be published in due course.

Be great to see her come home and race Andy. I'd like to see a couple of 'naysayers' have to eat their words.
