Riotous Rapha rammy

Postby Colin A » Tue Feb 16, 2010 12:00 pm

We have had a long weekend in London with the kids and grandparents organised for ages to celebrate granddads 70th. Despondent that I wasn’t going to meet up for a club run or, more likely, another turbo session Thursday came round and just before we left I checked my e-mail. There in all its glory was a notice about a Rapha sale at Condor bike shop on Friday and Saturday- Just round the corner from our hotel – “jackpot”, a soft shell, a hat a few long sleeved tops and a pair of shorts needed to complete my collection (Actually only have one top and two tee shirts)

We arrived at the Hotel on Friday morning and while the rest of the entourage got their bearings etc I scuttled off to the (not quite as near as it looks on the map) bike shop. Nice bike shop and everything, a bit pricy and lots of carbon porn. There was also a notice that said the Rapha sale didn’t start till 5pm (bugger)

Sneaked back to the hotel and then off to Madam Tussauds. Out of there at 4pm and Netty said, “I suppose you want to go to the sale now do you”. A quick reply of “anything you want dear” and we were off on the tube. Got there at ten to five and into a queue of about 60 people and about 70 fixed wheel bikes (Netty checked the number and apparently it is the law that you have to ride a fixie in London!) and temperatures hitting a chilly minus 20. An enterprising Moroccan coffee shop were selling beverages to the queuers but I didn’t bother since it didn’t look that we would be there that long. At five on the dot the queue moved about two yards “here we go” I thought, and then it halted again. An hour later after shuffling along the pavement and sharing “it’s just like the Blitz” jokes, Netty had long gone back to the hotel, I finally reached the front door. I looked in at the scene of devastation and began to panic. Mothers were throwing screaming children into boxes; fathers were throwing them out again and branding Kalashnikovs to protect the pile of Rapha delectable’s they had gathered. Some folk that had obviously been before had hired packs of Doberman dogs to clear a path to the goodies. It was a like a cross between the black hole of Calcutta, Caligula and Gladiator with a bit of the Somme thrown in for good measure. Behind the front bit of the shop is a mezzanine level where the shop assistants were standing looking down on the mayhem below them, taunting the customers and throwing in the odd arm warmer (never a matching pair though).

So I girded my loins and entered the fray (after all I had queued for an hour and I was determined to get something). 30 mins later having sifted through the plies of XXXLarge or XXXXSmall kit (which was all that was left) I emerged batter and bruised, max Hr up to 196bpm, with a tee shirt, three pairs of socks a vest and a bit of someone’s ear. The queue was still about 60 people long.

So if anyone mentions that I paid too much for overpriced Rapha gear. They are right and I would do it again tomorrow.
May I remind you of that scene

I have this mental image.............

'Posing kn*b-heads from That London, with more money than sense and a fixed wheel bike which has been purchased for about 2 grand but has been 'authentically aged to look like a courier's bike' - you will go on my first whistle........

......crazed bargain hunter with an unintelligible accent and his arm in a stookie and an eye patch, who looks vaguely like Fausto Coppi, you will go on my second whistle'.

Please tell me you didn't get your picture taken with the Lance Armstrong dummy at Madman Two Swords?

Lance wasn't there. It's a pity cos I'd got my new Ythan kit on under my jeans and sweater. Just ready to whip them off and get my photo taken. They still have Tiger Woods though!

Now back into mourning

I believe they were 'Dancing in the streets of Raith' last night.

I think they had to melt down Lance, McAuley Culkin and one of the Blue Peter Pets to get the new Chris Hoy dummy together.
